Fearter rating: 8/10
Is it a horror? Is it a thriller? Either way, it's a bit too 'drama school' in places.
Review (no spoilers):
This is a good film - but is it horror? It's well made, well acted and makes sense. It is an M. Night Shyamalan film, so it's nice to see that the plot makes sense and the ending is good. It also raises some interesting questions about people and society and there's a great cameo/small part by Mr Shyamalan.
However, for a film in the "horror" category on the film streaming service I used (NowTV) it isn't scary. So I'd argue that it's more of a thriller, however there are horror elements in it.
My main problem with the movie, apart from the lack of horror, is the sense that some scenes were made to show to drama school students "how to act". James McAvoy does a great job, but sometimes it seems that the priority is to showcase an actor's range rather than the plot.
A good film all in all, definitely worth watching (especially if you're at drama school). Don't expect to be scared though.
